We were honored to be joined earlier this month by childhood cancer advocates and supporters in New York City, where we marked 25 years of Children's Cancer Cause during our signature fundraising event of the year.
At the event, Children’s Cancer Cause founder Susan Weiner honored event co-chairs Susan and Stephen Scherr with an outstanding achievement award for their tremendous support of the childhood cancer movement. Susan and Stephen are parents to four children including William, a survivor of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. William sits on our Survivorship Advisory Council, and Susan is a member of our Board of Directors.
“After several events in the Scherrs’ apartment, Susan really took the lead to organize fundraising events in some of the most prestigious places around the City, including the James Burden Mansion. The Scherr family also hosted wonderful summer art events for many years,” Susan Weiner recalled. “All of these successful events bore the elegant touch of Susan Scherr - with Stephen’s quiet, steady support always in the background.”
Also at the event we presented the 9th annual Leonard M. Rosen Memorial Research Award to Pamela Hinds, RN, PhD, FAAN, nurse researcher at Children’s National Hospital. The annual Rosen Award pays tribute to late Children’s Cancer Cause chairman and founding board member, Leonard Rosen and his many years of service to the cause of pediatric cancer. Leonard’s son Adam L. Rosen - who presented the award to Dr. Hinds - is the current chair of the Children’s Cancer Cause board of directors.
Prior to joining Children’s National, where she holds the William and Joanne Conway Chair in Nursing Research, Dr. Hinds had a distinguished career at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. She is also a tenured professor in the School of Medicine and Health Sciences at George Washington University. Her research has articulated childhood and adolescent cancer patients’ and their parents’ experiences through all stages of treatment and care.
“For a number of decades now, I have had the privilege of listening to our children, adolescents, and young adults about what it is like to be treated for cancer,” said Dr. Hinds in accepting this award. “For many years, we didn’t ask children ‘what is it like?’ Instead, we looked to their blood, we listened to their physicians. But in fact, there are over 200 side effects that only children or adolescents or young adults in treatment can tell us about because they’re subjective, they’re internal. They’re hidden to the eyes of all of us. But we should know about the child voice because it is impacting their bodies and their lives.”
We salute the innovative work of Dr. Hinds to improve the drug development process for pediatric cancer patients and survivors, and we’re grateful for her foresight in bringing the perspectives of families and children toward advancing the next generation of safer, more effective therapies.
