New Series: Conversations with Children's Cancer Cause

We’re pleased to announce the launch of a new virtual series aimed at elevating voices from the childhood cancer community. Our first episode of “Conversations with Children’s Cancer Cause” features our founder Susan L. Weiner, PhD.

In this conversation, our CEO Steve Wosahla asks Susan to speak on some of the milestone moments over the past two decades that have led to improved research, treatment, and care for children with cancer. Susan discusses her motivation for founding the Children’s Cancer Cause in 1999 and tells us about two major events around the turn of the century that jump-started significant progress in pediatric oncology: the draft of the human genome and the formation of the Children’s Oncology Group.

In seven minutes, Susan breaks down for us how these developments have forever altered the landscape of childhood cancer — and their implications for the future.

Over the next two weeks - the second half of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month - we’ll bring you two more installments of this conversation between Susan and Steve. Be sure you’re following us on Facebook and subscribed to our blog to catch future episodes as soon as they’re released!

Coming up on Conversations with Children’s Cancer Cause:

“The third major thing [since 1999],” says Susan, “was the recognition of the burgeoning number of childhood cancer survivors. Survivors - though living longer - were struggling with major health problems and quality of life problems. And that is the subject for another talk and is something the Children’s Cause has devoted considerable thought and energy to, to try to improve the picture for these kids and young adults.”

As Susan promises, survivorship will be a core, recurring topic of our virtual chats. In October, we’ll bring you a series of episodes featuring a conversation with Smita Bhatia, M.D., MPH, Director of the Institute for Cancer Outcomes and Survivorship in the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine.
