Champion's Prize Enables ASK Foundation to Tutor More Kids with Cancer and Survivors
On behalf of the Stewart Survivorship Initiative, Children’s Cancer Cause is pleased to share another update on how funding from the 2022 Survivorship Champion’s Prize is being used to advance survivorship care. We’re highlighting the progress of each 2022 Prize recipient during June, which is National Cancer Survivor Month.
The first two installments shared updates from the Survivorship Program at Phoenix Children’s Hospital and the St. Jude Transition Oncology Program. This week’s update features the ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation, which received the Recognition Award for Scalability.
The Champion's Prize Recognition Award has allowed the ASK Foundation to continue to grow their educational support for survivors by increasing the number of sessions and hours they have been able to work with students in multiple locations throughout Virginia.
Since our last update, the Foundation has been able to nearly double the number of students served, and the number of sessions and hours have increased significantly.
Amy Godkin, ASK’s Executive Director (pictured at right), shared that “the award has been critical to our ability to help young patients and survivors who are struggling to keep up with their schoolwork and on grade level with their peers.”
Funding provided by the Recognition Award is focused entirely on the ASK Foundation’s online tutoring program for pediatric cancer survivors.
Parents have shared testimonials about how important their services are to survivors:
“Erika has helped Meesha with her education over the past two years. Meesha. Gets one on one coaching and tutoring each week. Meesha has progressed steadily with her Spanish and Math subjects. Erika takes the time to thoughtfully match the best tutor for Meesha. This has made the element of learning passionate and interesting. As Meesha's father, I am thankful to ASK and Erika.” --Moses
“The tutoring service has been the most important and beneficial for the kids as well as for the family. It's like a bridge connecting ASK kids to the real classroom and recovering wasted time due to treatment. The short & long term benefits are priceless for the kids, families, and society. Thank you for the support.” --Adam, dad of Lucas (survivor) & siblings Josh and Jacob
“The program has been so helpful in increasing my kid’s confidence in school, as well as in life in general. Lucas' math level has increased to almost a 7th grade level and he's in 4th grade. Madison has found a love for reading thanks to Erica's encouragement and motivation!” --Roxanne, mom of Madison (survivor) & sibling Lucas
The Children’s Cancer Cause is so gratified to see the expansion of this critical type of support for childhood cancer survivors and to hear directly from those who are served by the ASK Foundation.
